At Arrowhead, the emphasis is on process and materials. Each
garment is hand-cut and –fabricated in our home studio in Yarmouth, Maine using
the highest quality sustainable fabrics, including organic cotton, wool, denim
Founder and designer Suzanne MacFadyen has spent decades
fascinated and inspired by handmade textiles and homegrown manufacturing. Her
interest in the whole garment started early. Beginning in 1970, as a designer
for Rhode Island’s India Imports line, she traveled to the prêt shows in Paris and then to Jaipur each season—first to find
Western design inspiration, then to learn from and work with Indian fabric dyers.
Later, she launched Bear Wear, a women’s ready-to-wear line inspired by the—as
yet underexplored—sportswear industry, and Lipstick Traces, an all-leather,
tailored women’s punk line.
Whether punk or paisley, an attention to both materials and
domestic fabrication has marked Suzanne’s career. In 1994, faced with the
Northeast’s fast fading garment industry and the intense sticker shock of
overseas production, she decided to move on, disillusioned, after 30 years,
with what the industry had become.
With Arrowhead, Suzanne has found a new source of energy and
inspiration both in organic materials and in online direct-to-consumer sales
and production. By selling online or at trunk shows and making each item
herself, she’s once again able to focus on and explore her passions: beautiful,
storied fabrics and wearable, work-inspired, design.
